SELECTED WORK

Objects with a sense of place.

Each piece begins with clay and an idea, then evolves through throwing, hand-building, surface work, atmospheric firing and experimentation.

MY STUDIO

Where the work takes shape.

My studio is a working space: shelves of drying forms, bats and boards, glaze tests, tools, and pieces waiting for their next transformation.

I enjoy the balance between control and surprise, especially when primitive firing methods introduce marks that could never be completely planned.

THE ARTIST

Shelly Napoletano Flynn

Drawing on both contemporary and primitive techniques, I explore the possibilities of clay and fire, creating one-of-a-kind ceramics that balance the deliberate with the unexpected.

My work engages the tension between intention and accident, utility and art. I'm inspired by nature's asymmetry, textures, and colors. Botanical impressions, mineral-based colorants, and fire each respond in their own way to what I make. Ultimately, I want my work to create a connection with nature, with the material itself, and with the person who will live with and use the object.

Beyond my studio work, I provide private instruction and mentoring in the practice and philosophy of ceramics. Introducing others to clay offers a different kind of creative exchange, one that encourages curiosity, experimentation, and the discovery of what can emerge through making.
